Regulatory Chemist Conner Hodgkiss

I joined BioCote® as a regulatory chemist to take the opportunity to apply my knowledge and skills I had gained through academia to a technical position. It is great to be part of an excellent Technical Team whilst contributing to the future growth of the business. I am hugely motivated and excited about my journey here at BioCote®.

Conner Hodgkiss

Conner received his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in material chemistry at the University of Wolverhampton. Additionally, in 2022 Conner achieved a PGCE in secondary science with chemistry at Birmingham City University. Including moving to the Netherlands to complete a 6-month Erasmus exchange programme as part of his undergraduate degree.

For four years, Conner conducted novel research on the effects of a selection of natural and synthetic zeolites when used in cementitious based systems using a suite of analytical chemistry techniques. He gained valuable experience operating scanning electron microscopy (SEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) testing.

The basis of his research was to introduce a novel supplementary construction material to challenge the rising carbon dioxide emissions as a formation of the production of Portland cement.

Conner was able to infer that zeolites are very stable solids that are resistant to environmental conditions that challenge other materials. Concluding his research that mortar samples incorporating mordenite and philipsite at up to 15% replacement of cement demonstrated comparatively advantageous engineering and chemical compositional properties.

We have asked Conner to tell us a bit more about himself – welcome to the team!

I am an avid England cricket fan, and I attend test matches regularly. My ultimate goal is to visit Australia to see the Ashes play and watch a test at the world-famous Newlands cricket ground in Cape Town, South Africa.

In my spare time I enjoy attending live music particularly for indie rock bands such as Foals, Catfish and the Bottlemen, and Blossoms.

I love to travel and experience the array of cultures around the world. During my trips I always try the local cuisine and attempt to replicate such recipes at home (with differing degree of success!).

Evolving EU Biocidal Products Regulation: Updates on Silver Zinc Zeolite

At the recent 50th Biocidal Products Committee (BPC-50) meeting held in February 2024, Silver Zinc Zeolite received positive support for approval as an active substance under multiple Product-types (PTs), including disinfectants (PT2), film preservatives (PT7), and fibre, leather, rubber, and polymerised materials preservatives (PT9. This endorsement signifies a crucial step towards regulatory acceptance.
