Six months ago, Advertising & Marketing student Corey Waters-Long joined the BioCote® team as Social Media Intern. Today Corey discusses his experience at BioCote® and how the placement will impact his future studies and work. Over to you, Corey.

Why did you take up the social media marketing placement at BioCote®?

In my Advertising and Marketing course at Coventry University I have always had a strong focus on social media marketing. I find the Business-to-Business (B2B) audience in particular the most interesting to explore. BioCote® provided the exact opportunity I was looking for to give me valuable experience within my main field of study and get insights into a completely new industry.

What was your on-boarding experience like at BioCote®?

Joining the BioCote® team was a really smooth and positive experience for me. The team was very welcoming, and I was involved in the day-to-day management of our social media platforms from the word go and was able to contribute with content ideas very quickly. By joining external training sessions and workshops as a team, we have gained great insights into useful tools and approaches that helped improve our online presence. This is also helping me to create better content and to apply what I have learned in my Advertising and Marketing course to our social media marketing. Learning how to apply the marketing theory has allowed me to take on more duties progressively, such as the social media audit whereby we re-evaluated on how to design content for our audience.

Does the Advertising and Marketing theory match up with your practical social media marketing experience at BioCote®?

Social media marketing is present in everyday life, and nowadays most people across all demographics are connected to at least one of the social platforms (my personal favourite is definitely LinkedIn). It is a fantastic source of content that can really boost a business’ social media marketing performance by developing ever-growing relationships with their immediate audience and also their followers.

In my placement opportunity I have the opportunity to see how BioCote® adapts their social media content and strategies to the needs of their B2B audience. I’m surprised at how much theory from my Advertising and Marketing course is applied in my day to day work at BioCote®. However, there are a lot of new approaches and skills I pick up from my work experience. Additionally, I have been able to learn from others’ experiences through conversation and networking.

What is your favourite part of your work at BioCote®?

My favourite part of my internship at BioCote® is without a doubt the content creation. From researching scientific topics, curating product focused content, to the final copywriting and development of visuals. There is always a new opportunity to research and learn more as we approach a variety of different projects. This makes blogs and other topic based content very enjoyable to create. As an extension of this, I also thoroughly enjoy producing the social media marketing report, analysing what performs well and what doesn’t each month and adapting content to optimise it for better performance.

What has been your most beneficial experience to date in your opinion?

Working at BioCote® has given me plenty of experiences to learn from, but I think the most beneficial is just being able to engage with all teams in the office to learn more about how each department works. This has helped me to understand marketing’s role within the company and why it is important to choose the right tone of voice for different pieces of content to communicate the right message effectively to the right audience.

What new skills will you take back with you to Coventry University for your final year of studies?

There is so much from BioCote® that I can use when I return to Coventry University. The overall knowledge and understanding of the workplace is an asset in itself, which will allow me to propose effective and applicable social media marketing solutions. With this in mind, I believe that the most valuable skills that this experience has allowed me to develop is organisation through the development and structuring of the social media schedule and content. The organisational capabilities I have developed from working on multiple projects at the same time will help me in preparing for the Advertising and Marketing exams and working on my dissertation, whilst also searching for graduate job roles and preparing other assessments.
