As Mel’s year-long placement at BioCote® comes to a close, she reflects on the research experience and professional development gained. Joining us as a Biomedical Science student with a keen interest in microbiology, her placement offered an opportunity to explore how antimicrobial technology supports manufactured products.
Connecting microbiology with industry
“When I started my placement at BioCote, I was a Biomedical Science student with a strong interest in microbiology, but relatively little experience of how microbiology is applied within an industrial setting. Over the past year, I’ve had the opportunity to develop my practical skills, work on research projects and gain a much better understanding of how microbiological science can contribute to the development and performance of real-world products. My interest in applied microbiology also peaked through the exploration of antimicrobial technologies provided at BioCote. I was able to see how microbiological data can support the development of manufactured products and help businesses make informed decisions about antimicrobial performance.”
Taking ownership of research
“One of the most rewarding aspects of my placement was the opportunity to carry out my own research projects and having the responsibility for investigating a research question independently. Another valuable aspect of my placement was assisting with quality control. This gave me a greater appreciation of the importance of accuracy and consistency in recording data in an industrial setting.”
Developing professional skills and looking ahead
“Beyond the technical skills, my placement has also helped me develop professionally. I now appreciate the importance of communication, teamwork, time management, and being willing to ask questions and learn from others through working alongside experienced scientists. Looking back, I feel that my placement has complemented my Biomedical Science degree in a way that I could not have achieved through university alone. Most importantly, my time at BioCote has broadened my perspective on where a career in microbiology and biomedical science can take me. I joined the company interested in microbiology, but I’m leaving with a much stronger appreciation for antimicrobial technology, applied research and the role that science can play in solving real-world problems.”
We would like to thank Mel for her contribution to BioCote® throughout her placement. It has been a pleasure to support her development, and we wish her every success in her future studies and career.

MEBSS : Managing Microorganisms In Veterinary Environments
BioCote® conducted targeted testing against the MEBSS panel, five bacteria relevant to veterinary environments, including MRSA, E. coli, Bordetella, Salmonella, and Streptococcus. Using ISO 22196 methodology, results demonstrated up to 99.98% reduction across all organisms tested, supporting improved surface performance alongside routine cleaning practices.
