During the summer holidays you may have found yourselves on longer car journeys with your family, travelling to your staycation destination or the airport.  Recent studies by LeasingOptions and Which? suggest that childrens’ car seats can be dirtier than toilets, sparking discussions on how to keep fabrics more hygienic and your children safe in their seats.

Whilst it may come as no surprise that childrens’ car seats can be dirty from food residue, sticky hands and the odd nappy incident, the studies suggest that almost half of parents clean their child seat less than once every six month. Dirtier than steering wheels, hand brakes, gear sticks and centre consoles/radios, the researchers found both gut and faecal bacteria on dirty car seats – germs that can usually be found around toilet seats.

How to combat dirty fabrics

In addition to a thorough cleaning routine as advised step-by-step in the study findings, treating the initial fabrics of the car seats with antimicrobial additives can help to combat microbial growth.

Fabrics are prone to microbial growth due to the abundance of sweat, moisture, humidity, warmth, dirt, dead skin cells or fibres, often resulting in bad odours.  BioCote® textile additives provide a permanent, non-harmful odour control and deliver optimal freshness and hygiene for a range of textiles.

When microorganisms come into contact with the BioCote® protected fabric, the normal function and protein activity of the bacteria cell membrane is disrupted. This reduces the amount of microorganisms, preventing growth and proliferation.

The benefits of antimicrobial technology in fabrics

BioCote® antimicrobial technology is a fabric friendly Odour Control Technology, that guarantees an optimal freshness and hygiene for fabrics used in car seats, mattresses, household textiles and clothing.

In terms of its technical specifications, the antimicrobial additive used is non-migratory to skin or environment, has excellent skin tolerance, is non-toxic to waste water, is biodegradable and is BPR registered.

The technology offers high wash durability, multiple applications methods, is easy to apply, offers a durable broad-spectrum effect and helps to prevent odour formation.
