BioCote® and sustainability

Increased product durability

BioCote® are proud to have built and maintained our reputation as the antimicrobial brand you can trust over our 25 years within the industry. A vital part of our relationship with customers is our commitment to having as little negative impact on the environment as possible.

As sustainability becomes more of a pressing concern for both businesses and consumers, BioCote® understands the importance of employing long term environmental strategies that take into account the exhaustibility of our planet’s resources.

Achieving product longevity with BioCote® antimicrobial protection

BioCote® technology helps towards offering customers a solution to the growing concern of linear economy. Once incorporated into a product, our additives work continuously to protect against odour formation, staining and material degradation caused by microbes, and ultimately act to increase the product’s expected life cycle. This helps to reduce the output of resources in manufacturing due to there being fewer, but better quality, products being made. This shift from quantity to quality is key to progressing towards sustainable production.

The UK Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) commissioned a major study of product lifetimes, and its findings supported the notion that longer lasting products offer significant environmental benefits. In light of their findings, they state that they are looking for businesses to ‘design and manufacture goods that are more efficient, durable, repairable and recyclable’. By incorporating BioCote® technology into a product, companies can offer customers the personal economic gain of increased product longevity, as well as providing the environmental benefit of waste reduction.

We say ‘no’ to nano

Furthermore, BioCote® have never used nanotechnology due to the environmental implications of doing so. Our business purposefully chooses not to use any form of nanotechnology because of concerns regarding the ecological profile and environmental face of materials containing this type of technology. We instead made the decision to use active ingredients that do not leach out of a product once integrated and are classed as non-migratory. This technology will continue to protect the surface of the treated material for the entirety of the product’s expected life cycle.

Our actives have an atomic radius of 0.115nm in size, which is supported in a glass matrix and unequivocally falls outside of the size range of a nanoparticle. BioCote® technology therefore does not affect a products recyclability, and will not leach out of a product and cause environmental toxicity.

BioCote® technology is safe for use

BioCote® technology does not wear off or wash away and is well within the limits of exposure to be food contact safe both in the EU and US. BioCote® is the only additive supplier to have been certified by HACCP International, confirming BioCote® treated product’s suitability for use within food business that operate to the world’s highest standards.

The WELL Standard furthermore advocates for the use of non-leaching antimicrobial surfaces, due to their significance in improving cleanliness and hygiene “without leaching significant amounts of antimicrobial materials into the surrounding environment”.

Ultimately, BioCote® are committed to becoming a central part of the movement towards long term sustainable development. Our technology helps to protect our planet’s exhaustible resources through increasing a product’s shelf life, answering customer’s interests in resource efficiency and demands for waste reduction. We are excited to be a part of a generation where signs of change are emerging, and where there is a growing interest in product sustainability.
