BRENTFORD FC STRIKE TO COMBAT BACTERIA

Brentford FC has become the first football club in the world to introduce BioCote’s antimicrobial technology into its cleaning practices to reduce the risk of its players, staff and supporters being contaminated with harmful microbes including the flu virus H1N1, MRSA and E.coli.

A new case of C. difficile admitted to ward

The Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario has admitted another patient with the bacterial infection known as C. difficile, hospital officials have reported.

CHEO also declared detailed of an outbreak of the bacterium when they confirmed three in patients infected with C. difficile. One of those patients has since recovered and been discharged, meaning the known number of infected patients being treated remains at three.

“The good news is that we’re not climbing, but we’re not going back down,” CHEO spokeswoman Marie Belanger said.

Hospital staff diagnosed the most recent patient with C. difficile when they came into the hospital for scheduled treatment. They don’t know where the pathogen was contracted from.

The organising committee are interesrted in the results of the BioCote-University of Oxford research paper: ‘Campylobacter genotypes from poultry transportation crates indicate a source of contamination and transmission’ published in J Appl Microbiol., 2011.

The event will take place in Vivchananda Kendra, Cape Comarin, Tamil Nadu, India, on February 16-18, 2012.

Study shows public toilets are often hot spots for infectious bacteria

The latest article describing the microbiology of public toilets (restrooms) adds to the familiar story that these facilities are far from hygienic.

The article, appearing in WebMD Health News OnLine, reports the findings of a study of bacterial isolates from high touch environmental sites in 22 public toilets and aircraft by University of Florida. Bacteria isolated included Staphylococcus, E. coli and Enterococcus, all infectious bacteria capable of causing human illness. These findings were also presented at the annual meeting of the Infectious Diseases Society of America in Boston (http://www.idsociety.org/Index.aspx)

Given that it can be difficult to avoid using these types of public conveniences from time to time, what is the appropriate way to avoid contracting an illness caused by the sort of organism detected by this study? Undoubtedly good personal hygiene but the rationale for the application of BioCote antimicrobial technology is strong. BioCote’s technology is tried, tested and proven! It’s not claimed to be the cure, but it can be a useful compliment.

Richard Hastings and Guy Charteris, BioCote’s Technical Director and Business Development Manager, were invited to present to the Technical Advisory Committee of the Red Tractor Farm Assurance for Poultry organisation (formerly Assured Chicken Production). The committee is considering Campylobacter and pathogen cross contamination and wished to understand the findings of the scientific publication: ‘Campylobacter genotypes from poultry transportation crates indicate a source of contamination and transmission’ published by BioCote in collaboration with microbiologists at the University of Oxford (Journal of Applied Microbiology, 2011, Vol., 110, 1, pp.266-76. http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1365-2672.2010.04883.x/abstract)

A healthy question-answer session followed the slideshow presentation with the promise of discussions continuing. The Committee was also interested in the findings of the project BioCote has recently performed with scientists at the University of Warwick quantifying the anti-influenza properties of its silver technology. A second presentation to the Technical Advisory Committee is possible in due course to share information on the effectiveness of BioCote technology against influenza virus, a significant disease-causing agent in the global poultry industry.
