Antimicrobial specialist BioCote Ltd has strengthened its links with the coating industry, having joined the British Coatings Federation (BCF).

The BCF is the sole trade association representing the interests of the decorative, industrial, powder, printing ink and wallcovering industry.

BioCote® additives can be used in paints, inks, wallpaper and general coatings to create hygienic products that are a permanent protection against superbugs such as MRSA, E.Coli and other microorganisms.

Commenting on BioCote’s membership Graham Harvey, the company’s Commercial Director, said: “Joining the BCF will ensure we can work closely with coating and wallcovering manufacturers that are looking to offer antimicrobial products to their customers.

“Protection against bacteria, mould and viruses is becoming increasingly more important within a wide range of settings, both commercial and domestic. Therefore, offering coatings and wallcoverings with an antimicrobial additive to kill germs on contact is an attractive concept for those who want to create a healthy environment.”

Antimicrobial specialist BioCote Ltd has become the first technology company of its kind to be officially recognised for its benefits within the food industry. BioCote has successfully completed the HACCP International certification process, a recognition that no other antimicrobial solution has been awarded.

This HACCP certification supports organisations that demonstrate food safety excellence in non-food products that are designed for, or commonly used in, the food industry.

BioCote has undertaken an independent assessment and verification process. By completing this process, companies can demonstrate that their products are fit for purpose, and if used correctly they will not compromise food safety protocols.

Only products that are certified by HACCP International can carry the HACCP mark.

The HACCP International mark is particularly aimed at those products that are required to be ‘food safe’ compliant, or HACCP approved in order to meet the food safety demands of their quality conscious customers.

BioCote additives can be used in food packaging and manufacturing processes to create a hygienic solution – a permanent protection against superbugs such as MRSA, E.Coli and other microorganisms.

Speaking of BioCote’s achievement, Commercial Director Graham Harvey said: “The benefits of antimicrobial technology within the food industry have long been recognised, but it is fantastic to have official backing from HACCP.”

Brentford FC has become the first football club in the world to introduce BioCote’s antimicrobial technology into its cleaning practices to reduce the risk of its players, staff and supporters being contaminated with harmful microbes including the flu virus H1N1, MRSA and E.coli.

The NPower League 1 club worked in partnership with Highgrade Carpet & Upholstery Care to apply BioCote’s unique technology to the carpets in its sponsors’ lounge and Boardroom.

Bryan Cooper, MD at Highgrade, said: “The fact is that carpets provide the ideal breeding ground for a wide range of potentially deadly bacteria. This makes both the cleaning and protection of carpets paramount, particularly in areas where there is a lot of human traffic like football clubs where there may be a greater risk of bacterial contamination.

“Whilst the healthcare, retail and food industry sectors have been incorporating BioCote technology into their hygiene strategies for many years to reduce the risk of people being exposed to bacterial contamination, Brentford FC is the first football club to apply this technology to its facilities. This demonstrates its commitment to the well-being of everyone involved in the club. The impact of an outbreak of infectious disease amongst Brentford’s players for instance could be detrimental, therefore any measures to reduce this happening are well received.”

A global leader in antimicrobial technology, BioCote Ltd is usually incorporated into products at the manufacturing stage, providing built-in protection for the expected lifetime of a product. Independently proven to reduce levels of bacteria by up to 99.99%, it means BioCote technology creates a safer, cleaner and more hygienic environment.

Highgrade Carpet & Upholstery Care is the first company in the UK that can apply BioCote retrospectively, giving the company a competitive advantage in the cleaning market.

Bryan continued: “Ultimately, we can offer our customers an advanced cleaning treatment for any new or existing carpets and upholstery that will dramatically improve hygiene and combat bacterial growth and the associated risks of cross contamination.”

The Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario has admitted another patient with the bacterial infection known as C. difficile, hospital officials have reported.

CHEO also declared detailed of an outbreak of the bacterium when they confirmed three in patients infected with C. difficile. One of those patients has since recovered and been discharged, meaning the known number of infected patients being treated remains at three.

“The good news is that we’re not climbing, but we’re not going back down,” CHEO spokeswoman Marie Belanger said.

Hospital staff diagnosed the most recent patient with C. difficile when they came into the hospital for scheduled treatment. They don’t know where the pathogen was contracted from.

The latest article describing the microbiology of public toilets (restrooms) adds to the familiar story that these facilities are far from hygienic.

Public toilet sign

The article, appearing in WebMD Health News OnLine, reports the findings of a study of bacterial isolates from high touch environmental sites in 22 public toilets and aircraft by University of Florida. Bacteria isolated included Staphylococcus, E. coli and Enterococcus, all infectious bacteria capable of causing human illness. These findings were also presented at the annual meeting of the Infectious Diseases Society of America in Boston (http://www.idsociety.org/Index.aspx)

Given that it can be difficult to avoid using these types of public conveniences from time to time, what is the appropriate way to avoid contracting an illness caused by the sort of organism detected by this study? Undoubtedly good personal hygiene but the rationale for the application of BioCote antimicrobial technology is strong. BioCote’s technology is tried, tested and proven! It’s not claimed to be the cure, but it can be a useful compliment.
